Orval Brewery is a Trappist brewery within the walls of the Abbaye Notre-Dame d’Orval in the Gaume region of Belgium. The brewery produces two Trappist beers, Orval Vert and Orval.
Orval Vert (or Petit Orval) is available only at the Abbey or the local cafe “A L’ange Gardien”. But thankfully, you don’t have to travel to the source to experience the world-renowned ‘Orval’ Trappist ale.
It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Its very distinctive taste is largely attributed to an additional dry-hopping process between the first and second fermentations. Hallertau, Styrian Goldings and French Strisselspalt hops infuse the beer during a three-week maturation period. Brettanomyces (local wild yeast) is also added during this period. Through this, the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.
